I found a great article about blogging and teaching.  I think it is very important for our work.  Give it a read and tell me what you think:

The teacher’s concern about teaching BLOGGING rather than simply writing and posting what they wrote reminded me of a conversation I had with Cory regarding teh activities I have been devising – There’s got to be interaction/link between the students’ posts and and an online SOURCE. Otherwise it is merely a writing aticity posted on the internet.
The article brings some good ideas on how to teach BLOGGING, such as the research-based posts and blog-based posts, but I wonder if the suggestion of blogging about class content would fall under the category of blogging, since it relates to offline material. I have been trying to steer clear of asking students to post about our in-class topics; however, many students have felt compelled to do so even without my asking.

Timely and enlightening. I remember discussing this interaction between students’ posts and an online source when Renato brought it up in our last meeting. I agree that without this interaction, the post is a writing activity on the internet. Looking back upon what my students have done so far makes me think about it even more carefully. Have they been blogging? Blogging as part of teaching is a new concept for me and I still have mixed feelings about it. Moreover, I still haven’t made up my mind whether relating the posts to stuff covered in class is blogging or not. I believe standardizing and disseminating the concept of blogging are important steps once the project becomes part of the courses.

Food for thought, for sure. But how much of actual blogging are our students’ blogs supposed to be? I pose the question because, many times, our students’ writing activities are not what writing activities should really be like. If we look at the teaching of writing as an art, what we do in our courses are far away from ideal. My question is … are we actually teaching students to blog, or are we using blogging as one more language teaching tool, just as we do it with writing?
